Capacity Works

HDPE WELDING AND INSTALLATION

ECK Civil Engineering won the contract for the welding, installation and testing of over 5km of 500mm and 450mm HDPE pipework. The HDPE Pipework was being used to transport brine water through Cheshire.

Using the McElroy Vault app, every weld was uploaded to a live server with all weld data, weld parameters, photographs, and location of the weld for QA reports. All lines were pressure tested via a type 2 test, the crude brine and the weak brine pipes were tested to 15bar and the pumped weak brine was tested to 24bar. After testing, the HDPE pipework was connected to new steel pipework ready for commissioning.

Royal Oldham Hospital - Gas and Water Diversion

PIPE DIVERSION

ECK were appointed to divert external gas and water mains to allow for construction of new hospital building. Works included running a new 180mm barrier pipe diversion main for the water supply which was pressure tested and chlorinated prior to a live connection.

The works on the gas involved running a new 125mm diversion gas main, which was connected while the gas pipework remained live to ensure hospital operations was not effected.

Essex Pipework Project

LARGE DIAMETER OUTFALL HDPE

ECK Civil Engineering were instructed to weld 250m of 710mm HDPE pipe with electrofusion collars alongside 250m of 355mm pipe for pumping mains for a new waste management plant. Here we used high powered generators with electrofusion boxes due to the size of the pipe.

The electrofusion boxes were blue box enabled for better data collection of joint records for the client. Following the completion of the welding, we then pressure tested the pipes before a new tarmac road was constructed above.

Royal Alexandra and Albert School

THE LARGEST GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP OF ANY SCHOOL IN THE UK

ECK Civil Engineering worked as the main subcontractor, to deliver both groundworks and HDPE pipework elements of a large ground source heat project, to convert the majority of St Alexandra and Albert School heating system from its existing ageing oil boiler systems to a new heat pump systems. The site is within 260 acres of Capability Brown landscape, with Grade II Gatton Hall at its centre. It is said to be the largest ground source heat pump project in a school in the UK.

Overall, ECK installed over 25000m of HDPE Pipework, ranging from 160mm flow and return pipework, to 40mm borehole and collector loops, several of which were excavated and installed working alongside the onsite archaeologist, to ensure the history of the site was preserved.

Shepperton Studios

In 2022, ECK secured the water and gas services package for Shepperton Studios’ redevelopment, covering three stages and offices. Our work included a new 250mm MDPE gas ring main with 90mm and 125mm supplies to each building. We installed three ring mains with barrier pipes, meeting client specs.

We introduced a 110mm booster cold water ring main, a 110mm CAT5 ring main (32mm to 90mm), and a 225mm hydrant ring main with type 2 hydrants. Our installation included a 6” water supply from the boundary to a utility building serving site-wide needs for cold water and CAT5 systems.

ECK collaborated closely with the client, ensuring a safe, defect-free installation. Kudos to all teams for an excellent job!

“I first encountered ECK Civil Engineering Ltd two years ago, the company arrives on site as subcontractor of ****** Construction Ltd, they had been engaged to supply and install all of the underground piping network for the two main projects we were undertaking at that time. ECK Civil Engineering Ltd very quickly came to my attention, it was clear that the team knew their business and appreciated the difficulties posed by our particular environment.

They worked safely and efficiently along side these active services, developing effective ways to ensure no damage was caused and the project was delivered on time and on budget.

What are the benefits of HDPE Pipe (High Density Polyethylene Pipe) Systems?

HDPE pipe (High Density Polyethene pipelines) are water companies preferred option for the delivery of drinking water to millions of homes across the United Kingdom.

It is created to last over 50 years at its maximum operating pressure, it is renowned as the best product for all water main installations, gas pipework and fire hydrants/sprinkler mains.

HDPE pipe systems are excellent for the following reasons:

  • High flexibility and lightweight
  • Low friction and high flow rate
  • Able to be fusion welded throughout
  • Resistance to corrosion
  • Suitable for various installation methods
  • Cost saving in transportation and installation

High Density Polyethene Pipe (HDPE Pipe) can expand and contract with fluctuating operating system pressures and ground movement.

HDPE pipe and it’s flexibility whilst maintaining pressure holding strength means the system is leak-free and suitable for continual use over a long period of time.

As HDPE pipe is able to be fusion welded, this gives asset owners long-term confidence the pipeline will operate leak-free for its full design life.

What Is Protecta Line?

Protecta Line is the original plastic pipe system trusted by water authorities, housebuilders, contractors and installers to safely transport drinking water through contaminated land for over 20 years.

Protecta Line plastic piping has a multi-layer construction consisting of an internal polyethene core for carrying clean water, an aluminium barrier layer and finally an outer polyethene layer for protection.

All ECK Civil Engineering Ltd engineers are highly trained with the latest equipment to install, commission and repair all Protecta Line plastic pipes.

Can You Butt Fusion Weld HDPE Pipe?

To install our HDPE Pipe Systems, we use heat or butt fusion welding. Our engineers use a hydraulic butt fusion machine for installation that welds the HDPE pipes together.

Can You Electrofusion Weld HDPE Pipe?

Another method of joining HDPE Pipes where butt fusion welding is not suitable is Electrofusion welding.

Our engineers use Prefabricated fittings, which incorporates an electrical heating coil that melts the plastic of both the fitting and the pipe, which causes them to fuse together.

An electrofusion control unit (ECU) supplies the electrical energy necessary to heat the coil.

The basic fusion parameters: temperature, pressure and time, are controlled by the ECU which is programmed to establish these parameters from the barcode read from the fitting itself.

Underground Water & Gas Leak Detection

ECK Civil Engineering Ltd has grown to not only be a supplier, manufacturing and installation company but we can also carry out underground leak detection throughout the UK.

Underground leak detection is also something our HDPE pipework engineers have the experience, knowledge and latest equipment to undertake. As we offer pipework and groundworks services, when and if we find a leak, we are able to repair leaks efficiently and quickly for our clients.

Whether you have an underground mains water supply pipe leak, potential gas leak or just need an annual survey to check for repairs our HDPE pipework engineers can assist.

Detecting leaks in underground pipework can be challenging, however, we are well equipped and have a wide range of technology available to us such as gas leak detection, pipe mic, and acoustic leak detection equipment.

FAQs

Can’t see your question? Get in touch and we’ll be happy to answer for you.

Why do you use HDPE?

ECK Civil Engineering use HDPE pipes to provide an underground water supply. They provide a zero leak rate and they are more environmentally sustainable than other pipe as it doesn’t carry the toxins other pipes carry.

Can HDPE pipes be used for hot water?

HDPE pipes can be used for hot water as a liner in a multilayer pipe.

HDPE pipes were originally not equipped to stand the temperature of hot water however, suppliers then developed cross-linked polyethylene which provided the high-temperature performance needed to be used for hot water.

How long will HDPE pipe last?

HDPE pipes are built to last at least 50 with a maximum of 100 years, this is because of the high-density polyethylene that the pipe is made from.  HDPE pipe is built to last so they do not have to be replaced as frequently, therefore they are a much more cost effective option.
